Power measurement (strain gauge)

Our engineers use strain gauges and modern equipment to accurately measure torque, shaft speed and power of marine propusion engines and generators. Due to the limited weight and exceptional portability of our systems, our team can be deployed world wide. At every occasion, we record and store the measured power, which makes our power measurement service a very suitable tool for the optimization of engine and propeller performance, acceptance trials of new propulsion installations and the enforcement of power related legislation.

measurement system

Each strain gauge uses the Wheatstone bridge principle. We use a full-bridge gauge to measure torque, which is the most accurate type. In addition, this gauge type compensates for temperature changes. Our team of engineeers is trained to prepare the shaft ans carefulle apply gauges to it. A transmitter is connected to the gauge which transmits an analogue voltage signal which is proportionate to the applied torque. Simutaneously, an infrared pick-up is installed to measure revolutionary shaft speed. A computer system is used to process and store the acquired data. The raw data is saved for future analysis and verification. Our system can measure two propeller shafts simultaneously and can record power uninterrupted for at least 30 days.

Application

The use of strain gauges to measure torque and power is relatively simple and accurate. Our team gained a lot of experience while measuring shipboard applications. At new building project and refits, we can determine whether the measured power is according to the engine, gearbox and propeller specifications. A shaft power verification can also be conducted as part of a vessel and engine performance trial, or to determine whether the developed power exceeds a certain (legal) maximum.
